Lamborghini Murciélago LP670-4 SuperVeloce China Limited Edition

At the Beijing auto show, Lamborghini is joining Bentley among top-rung luxury manufacturers unveiling “China Edition” cars. Bentley introduced two China editions, one of its Flying Spur Speed and one of the Continental GT. Seen here is Lamborghini’s Murciélago LP670-4 SuperVeloce China Limited Edition. And we thought Texas was the biggest country to get its own special-edition vehicles. (Yes, we know Texas isn’t a country. But ask any Texan and they’ll tell you: It could be.)
So what sets the Murciélago LP670-4 SV China Limited Edition apart from all those workaday Murciélago LP670-4 SVs? Only the strength of an erupting volcano. Well, an orange stripe down the center of the car, anyway, that Lamborghini says symbolizes the strength of said volcano. The rest of the car is matte gray. Inside, the black Alcantara is trimmed with vibrant orange stitching, and the paddles for the e-gear automated manual transmission are painted orange as well.
Otherwise, it’s all humdrum Murciélago LP670-4 SV, which is to say it’s fantastic. With 661 hp from the 6.5-liter V-12, the SV should get from rest to 60 mph in around three seconds flat, and with a lap of just 2 minutes 53.9 seconds, it was the fourth-quickest street-legal car we’ve ever tested at our annual Lightning Lap. Only 10 Murciélago LP670-4 SuperVeloce China Limited Editions will be sold. While most other special edition cars might be numbered, only the Lambo will have the owner’s name engraved on the number plate as well. So there, Bentley.

Hyundai Sonata Hybrid 2011

There is no doubt that the all-new 2011 Hyundai Sonata is a hugely important vehicle to the Korean automaker. Combining a swoopy new exterior with performance that rivals the best the midsize sedan segment has to offer, the all-new Sonata is out to increase market share in one of the hottest-contested classes in the U.S. Now, at the 2010 New York Auto Show, Hyundai has unveiled the requisite eco-friendly Sonata variant -- the Sonata Hybrid.
 
Contrary to many hybrid variants of existing models, Hyundai has actually made quite a few visual changes to the Sonata Hybrid's exterior. Among the list of equipment unique to the hybrid version of the Sonata are the headlights and taillights, bumper fascias, rocker panels, front grille, 'eco-spoke' wheels, air dam and side sills, badging and paint color. Sure, some of those changes are purely cosmetic, but Hyundai says that many are functional, making the Sonata Hybrid more aerodynamic and lowering its drag coefficient to a slippery 0.25 -- the same as the Toyota Prius.

The 2011 Sonata Hybrid marks the first production use of Hyundai's Hybrid Blue Drive technology -- a proprietary platform that we've seen in prototype form for some time now. As a full parallel hybrid drivetrain, Blue Drive can operate independently on either its 169-horsepower 2.4-liter gasoline engine or its 40-horsepower electric motor, with total overall power listed at 209 horsepower and 195 pound-feet of torque. In sharp contrast to most of competition, which employ CVTs for their hybrids, the Sonata Hybrid utilizes the automaker's in-house compact six-speed automatic transmission with electric oil pump, which Hyundai says offers similar economy while retaining a more conventional shift feel that resonates better with customers

Another key feature the Blue Drive system is its battery technology. Hyundai claims to be the only automaker utilizing lithium-polymer batteries in a production vehicle, the advantages of which are many. According to Hyundai, lithium-polymer batteries offer the same benefits of lithium-ion batteries, but are more robust, lighter, easier to cool, and more easily packaged due to a significantly thinner profile. The automaker further claims that compared to nickel-metal hydride batteries, lithium-polymer batteries are more resistant to changes in temperature, have a slower self-discharge rate, and offer 10 percent greater efficiency with a 40 percent reduction in volume.
Other power-saving tricks have been employed to keep the Sonata Hybrid as efficient as possible. Its Theta II gasoline engine operates on an Atkinson Cycle, making changes to compression and power strokes when the electric motor is operating in unison, conserving energy and boosting fuel economy. Hyundai's Hybrid Power Control management software also features a start/stop system that shuts down the gasoline engine when the vehicle is stationary, automatically restarting it when pressure is reapplied to the throttle.

To help ensure that the Sonata Hybrid is being driven as efficiently as possible, a Hybrid Technology Display is located inside (either on the instrument panel or on the optional navigation display), monitoring which mode the vehicle is being driven in, energy flow inside the vehicle, engine and motor movement, fuel level, battery power level and charge status, and both average and instant mpg.
Much like the gasoline-powered Sonata, Hyundai claims its Sonata Hybrid is a segment leader in many regards, with the lowest curb weight (3457 pounds), most horsepower, and greatest passenger volume (104 cubic feet) of any of its competition from Ford, Nissan, Toyota and Honda. While actual EPA numbers have yet to be released for the Sonata Hybrid, Hyundai is estimating 37/39 city/highway mpg -- figures that place the Sonata right around the top of the pack with Ford's 41/36 mpg Fusion Hybrid. Whether the EPA backs up those figures remains to be seen. Also remaining to be seen is whether cold hard numbers can equate to an all-around better hybrid midsize sedan. Hyundai Equus 2011 - Hyundais New Luxury Flagship Checks All the Right Boxes, But Is It Enough?

One year ago, Hyundai placed its Korean-market Equus flagship luxury sedan on its show stand at New York "to test reaction," though validating the decision to bring it here was more the case. Now, with the 2011 Hyundai Equus bound for the U.S. on display at this year's New York show, Hyundai appears to be setting out to accomplish what Lexus did 20 years ago, only this time around, Lexus finds itself a target.
Hyundai has lined up the Lexus LS 460 in the crosshairs in addition to the Mercedes-Benz S550. On paper at least, the Equus is neck-and-neck with both of its main bogeys.

It's worth noting that the Equus is not a clean-sheet design. The car has existed in Korea for more than a decade, so Hyundai has had plenty of time to get it right before launching it in America this fall. If the spec sheet is to be believed, they've succeeded in producing a vehicle that can hang with the top dogs in the segment. The Equus in most cases offers as much or more interior space than either the Benz or the Lexus, comparable power, high-tech suspension and all the requisite luxury features.
Its 4.6-liter Tau V-8, for example, is slightly more powerful than the LS and the S550 with 385 horsepower at your command, though it falls significantly short on torque, with just 333 pound-feet available. With a ZF six-speed automatic sending power to the rear wheels, Hyundai stakes a claim of less than 6.4 seconds to 60 mph, but that puts the big horse a full second behind its Japanese and German competition, despite the fact that all three cars report curb weights within 300 pounds of each other depending on trim. At least Hyundai can say it's kept up on the mileage, matching the LS 460's 16 mpg city and 19 mpg highway and besting the S550.

BMW X5 2011 - A New Face and 400-hp Twin-Turbo Motivation


While BMW spent last year adding upgraded engines to its lineup, the X5 sat untouched, forced to enjoy only the 3.0-liter diesel found in the xDrive35d. A potent mill, yes, but the other Bimmers received a more efficient, single turbo inline-six; if they didn't, more power came to their twin-turbo setup. A 400-horsepower twin-turbo V-8 headlined the X6, while the M versions of the X6 and the X5 boasted a silly 555-horsepower. Now, the standard X5 gets its turn. Along with an exterior refresh, the 2011 BMW X5 receives two new powertrains.

At the top of the hierarchy is the X5 xDrive50i, which features BMW's all-aluminum, twin-turbo V-8. With direct injection, variable valve timing, and its "reverse flow" setup (the turbochargers rest in the valley between the cylinders), the engine makes 400-horsepower and 450 pound-feet of torque, the latter from 1750 rpm to 4500 rpm. Similar to the X6, BMW claims that acceleration to 60 mph in the X5 xDrive50i takes 5.3 seconds. Yet the X5 undercuts the current Sports Activity Coupe by $8800 by starting at $59,275.

Underneath the V-8 is the xDrive35i. It receives the 3.0-liter single-turbo straight-six (known internally as N55) that has been replacing most twin-turbo mills in the BMW line. It should be no surprise that the engine makes 300 horsepower and 300 pound-feet of torque, but, interestingly, its 0-60 mph claim of 6.4 seconds matches that of the outgoing, V-8-powered xDrive48i. The xDrive35i starts at $46,675.
Both engines come attached to the same eight-speed automatic that BMW introduced on the 5 Series Gran Turismo and 760Li Sedan last year. It weighs no more than the replaced six-speed, BMW says, and the transmission offers closer ratios in the lower gears for improved acceleration and two tall gears for cruising. Both engines also gain brake energy regeneration, which disengages the alternator so that the deep-cycle Glass Mat battery only charges during coasting or braking. BMW says this technology is good for a 1-2 percent fuel consumption savings.

Toyota Avalon 2011 - Auto Shows

In between deflecting questions about runaway Camrys and Priuses that don’t stop, Toyota found time at the Chicago auto show to unveil the 2011 Avalon, which goes on sale this spring.

In truth, there's a lot of old Avalon here; the sheetmetal and interior are new, but the running gear and platform are the same. The new car features the same 3.5-liter V-6 engine that makes 268 hp, mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. Toyota says that the car hits 20 mpg in the city and 29 on the highway on the EPA cycle.

As expected, the exterior design—the work of Toyota’s CALTY studio in California—was torpor-inducing, but the new interior is very clean and neat, featuring a simplified center stack and the segment's only reclining rear seat. Myriad driver distractions are available, including Bluetooth music streaming.

The Avalon comes in two levels: standard and upscale Limited. Even the base car gets standard leather upholstery, an eight-way power driver's seat, dual-zone climate control, a rearview camera, and 17-inch aluminum wheels. All Avalons get a full array of airbags and electronic safety aids, including an override for the gas pedal when the brakes are pressed. The latter, of course, is a feature that would have saved Toyota's bacon if they had thought of installing it a model before 2011.

As yet, there's no word on Avalon pricing, but don't expect it to stray far from the current model's when it hits the showroom floors.

Porsche Cayenne 2011 - Prototype Drive

Porsche purists may have hated the Cayenne from the moment of its inception, but the success of the truck has allowed the continued production of cars that enthusiasts yearn for. In fact, in one of the supreme ironies of the auto industry recently, the profitability of the VW Touareg–based SUV was a reason that Porsche was able to attempt a hostile takeover of  Volkswagen last year.

Even though that bid failed and Porsche has become part of the VW Group, the new bosses certainly recognize the importance of the Cayenne to Porsche’s bottom line. That’s why we recently found ourselves in the Middle East, evaluating prototypes of the second-gen version of the Cayenne. The vehicle is the product of a revised platform that is shared with the next VW Touareg and Audi Q7. The new Cayenne is 1.8 inches longer overall and rides on a wheelbase stretched 1.6 inches, making for a ­roomier rear seat that now slides fore and aft by 6.3 inches. There are 24 cubic feet of space behind the rear seats, up from 19; with the rear seats folded, the Cayenne will accept 63 cubic feet of stuff, about the same as before.

One of the main criticisms of the previous Cayenne was its blob-like shape, which looked a bit like an eroded brick. For Cayenne No. 2, chief designer Michael Mauer and his team devised more subtle air intakes underneath the front bumper and a more sculpted hood that has cut-lines like the iconic 911’s. The liftgate slopes more now, giving a lighter appearance at the back. While they were at it, the Porsche designers put together an interior that’s similar to the spectacular Panamera’s.

Another point of contention was the porkiness of this Porsche—as much as 5600 pounds in some trims. To get mass under control, the Cayenne now has a heavy dose of aluminum parts: hood, doors, and front fenders, as well as suspension pieces. According to Rolf Frech, director of complete vehicle engineering and quality management, “Trim level for trim level, a new Cayenne is nearly 440 pounds lighter than the old one.” A Cayenne S now weighs 4553 pounds, according to Porsche, some 400 pounds less than the claimed weight of the current Cayenne. However, the last Cayenne S we tested weighed 5351 pounds, which would suggest a still hefty two and a half tons for the new model.

This lower weight is the big reason that the next Cayenne, which goes on sale later this year as a 2011 model, offers better gas mileage than the current vehicle. The current Cayenne already has a range of direct-injection engines, which basically carry over but are updated to the latest-generation, slightly more powerful units from the Panamera. The naturally aspirated 4.8-liter V-8 will make 400 horsepower, a gain of 15, and the Turbo holds at 500. The entry-level 3.6-liter V-6 model will make a less sexy 300 horsepower. A start-stop feature will be standard on all Cayenne gasoline engines.

The hybrid version, which mates a supercharged 333-hp, 3.0-liter Audi V-6 engine with a 52-hp electric motor, most likely will go on sale here in early 2011. This vehicle will, Porsche claims, achieve 29 mpg on the combined European cycle (that’s more like a 25-mpg EPA combined number), which is better than many a mid-size luxury sedan. We’ve driven this powertrain, and it’s remarkably good.

During this first access to the new Cayenne, we focused more on the Turbo (can you blame us?).  As with all the other gasoline engines, power is transmitted via a completely new eight-speed automatic transmission sourced from Aisin that shifts quickly and very smoothly. First and second gears are short, giving fast acceleration off the line. The Turbo has a claimed 0-to-62-mph time of 4.6 seconds. (The S needs 5.9 seconds, and Porsche is traditionally conservative with its performance claims.)

At the other end, the seventh and eighth ratios are long in order to save fuel. Porsche went with a conventional torque-converter automatic because of fears that a dual-clutch gearbox would overheat from the Turbo’s massive 516 pound-feet of torque and wouldn’t be as robust for rock crawling at very low speed. Yes, Porsche still persists with the quaint notion that an SUV ought to be off-road capable (the company does sell a lot of them in the Middle East).

After a couple of hours on what seemed like a never-ending straight road through the Arabian Desert, the quietness of the engine and the lack of tire noise made it difficult to stay awake. Luckily, we left the paved road and turned toward a huge dune area that rose 200 feet and featured very soft and deep sand. Frech and his engineers come here to calibrate the torque distribution of the new Cayenne’s all-wheel-drive system under extreme traction conditions. Under normal road conditions, about 90 percent of the engine’s torque goes to the rear wheels. As soon as the wheel sensors identify a rotational difference between the front and the rear wheels, the system sends more torque to the front—close to 100 percent, if need be.

For off-roading, just move a switch in the center console to the “mountain” symbol. The air suspension automatically raises the Cayenne’s body, and the center differential locks. A rear-diff lock is engaged if the car is fitted with the off-road equipment that’s standard on the Turbo and optional on the others. At full throttle, the Cayenne Turbo jumped to about 50 mph seemingly instantly. In the five seconds after it reached the foot of a dune, the Cayenne dug its tires into the sand and lost some speed but resolutely kept going, with 5000 rpm steady on the tach. At 30 mph, we easily swept to the top of the dune. “You would not do this with its predecessor,” Frech explained. “Only the new Cayenne can apportion the engine’s power over this kind of terrain.”

After plenty of time exploring the Cayenne’s limits in an environment that pretty much none of its American owners will ever encounter—unless they go bounding off into the Mojave on an impulse—we ventured back onto pavement. Corners were hard to find, but we discovered some high-speed bends and dips in the road. The steering is accurate, and stability in fast corners is amazing for a truck.

Although the new Cayenne is still a heavy SUV, the weight reduction and improved electronic chassis systems have made it much more impressive dynamically. It also looks a lot less bulky and ridiculous than it used to. We can’t say that Porsche has coached a lineman into a wide receiver, but this nose tackle now has the mobility of a linebacker.

Ford Edge and Edge Sport 2011 - Auto Shows

When it was introduced for the 2007 model year, the Edge was like a contemporary Mariah Carey—great to look at, but struggling with a weight problem and the resultant effects on performance. At the Chicago auto show, Ford shows off a freshening that enhances the Edge’s appearance, overhauls the interior, and, although not directly addressing the issue of mass, will increase performance.

Like most mid-cycle refreshes, the Edge’s 2011 update starts with a nose job. Every panel up front is new: hood, fenders, grille, and fascia. The result is a sultrier shape than the blocky original Edge—the headlights are narrower, the three-bar grille dips deeper into the fascia, and the overall look is softened and rounded—but still clearly descendant from it. Around back, the hatch is new, with taillights that ditch the trendy clear lenses of the original model for more timeless red ones.

Functional Changes

Underneath that new hood, the Edge will have a selection of two new engines and one updated unit. The new base engine will be a 2.0-liter turbocharged, direct-injected EcoBoost four-cylinder. Power figures have not been released yet, but figure on about 230 hp and 240 lb-ft of torque. Mid-level SEL models will get the 3.5-liter V-6 from the previous Edge, but updated with variable timing on both intake and exhaust camshafts, with output increasing 20 hp and 3 lb-ft, to 285 and 253, respectively.

Top-of-the-line Sport models, in addition to unique black grille slats, smoked head- and taillights, and black-trimmed, 22-inch wheels; get Ford’s 3.7-liter V-6, which delivers a relatively modest bump in hp—to 305—over the 3.5, but a torque gain of 27 lb-ft, for a total of 280. All three engines will be paired with six-speed automatics, with the Sport featuring standard paddle shifters that are unavailable with the other engines.

It’s What’s Inside That Counts

The Edge’s new interior is perhaps even more attractive than the sheetmetal. A sleek new center stack steals the show, housing Ford’s new MyFord and MyFord Touch vehicle-interface systems. These two are the next evolution of Ford’s Sync. MyFord will be standard on all 2011 Edges, but MyFord Touch costs extra. Both are vehicle-management systems using a small LCD screen in the gauge cluster—the fancier MyFord Touch gets two, one on either side of the speedometer—and a larger LCD screen in the center stack.

The small screens in the IP are controlled by five-way switches (up, down, left, and right arrows plus a center “select” button) on the steering-wheel spokes, while the center is operated via touch. The left IP screen is the only one MyFord buyers get, and it displays vehicle information such as stability-control settings, a tachometer, or trip-computer information. The screen to the right of the speedometer—again, only available with MyFord Touch—is reserved for audio, phone, navigation, and climate-control info. The center screen handles the same information as the right smaller screen, with the added benefit of being accessible to the front passenger.

Call it the Kitchen Sync

All of MyFord and MyFord Touch’s functionality builds on top of the next-generation Sync features, which include easier interaction through what Ford calls “direct speech” commands. No longer does a person dial a phone number by saying “phone” then waiting for Sync to respond before saying “call Jane.” Now, the command is simply “call Jane,” and Sync makes the call. Or, if you want to find a sporting event, you can simply say “tune to Baltimore Ravens game” rather than flipping through channels looking for the game, and Sync will find it. Additionally, below the MyFord interface are capacitive-touch controls for audio and climate, and those opting for the upgraded Sony stereo are treated to a Sony-designed audio interface. Though the system does look cool, we see frustrations growing from audio controls that will not react to thickly gloved fingers.

A vehicle with features like MyFord Touch can’t get by without a healthy dose of technology elsewhere. To that end, the Edge also will receive a bunch of optional high-tech gear including keyless entry and ignition, blind-spot monitors, adaptive cruise control, and rain-sensing windshield wipers. The 2011 Edge will go on sale later in 2010. Pricing should remain close to today’s levels, with a base SE beginning around $28,000 and Sport models starting near $35,000.

BMW 335is Coupe 2011 - First Drive Review

To fill the gap in the 3-series lineup between the 300-hp 335i and 414-hp M3, BMW is introducing the 2011 335is coupe and convertible. We were unaware that said gap needed to be filled, but we’re told that the 335i is seen in the U.S. as just an ordinary 3-series, and as such, there’s room for something more exotic than a 335i but less outlandish than an M3. Now that we’ve been given the chance to drive the 335is coupe, we’re coming around to accepting this whole gap idea.

More Power and a Body Kit and . . .

Conceptually similar to the 330i Performance package model that was available as part of the previous-generation 3-series lineup, the 335is doesn’t go so far as to threaten the M3’s supremacy, but it definitely ups the sportiness quotient. To that end, the 335is gets 320 hp and 332 lb-ft torque from the twin-turbo 3.0-liter inline-six engine, and an overboost function allows for seven-second blasts of 370 lb-ft of torque. Unlike the regular-grade 2011 335i, the 335is sticks with the older twin-turbo engine for the simple reason that BMW engineers had more experience tuning it. This same engine can also be found in the Z4 sDrive35is that was introduced at this month’s Detroit auto show. In the Z4, the engine makes 335 hp; a more restrictive intake on the 3-series accounts for the 15-hp difference.

To make the 335is a track-worthy vehicle, BMW upgrades the cooling system with an additional radiator and beefs up the engine mounts. Inside are standard sport seats, steel pedals, an M Sport steering wheel, and textured aluminum trim. Between the seats sits the familiar six-speed manual, but it’s modified here to have shorter throws. For those who prefer not to shift for themselves, BMW is offering its seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox. The DCT system is identical to the one in the M3 and comes with steering-wheel-mounted paddle-type shifters.

Exterior styling builds on that of the 3-series’ 2011 freshening and adds an aggressive M Sport body kit. The kit has a more aggressive front fascia that ditches the coupe’s fog lamps in the interest of increased cooling capacity; the 335is convertible keeps its fog lamps. (And just to confuse you, we posted photos of preproduction coupes with fog lights; the decision to ditch them apparently came after these cars were built.) A new rear bumper incorporates a diffuser-style piece, and the twin exhaust pipes are finished in matte black. New gray-painted, split-five-spoke wheels are the only change to the chassis, despite the extra power—there are no tweaks or modifications to the suspension or brakes.

Same Poise, Even Better Soundtrack

Immediately on starting the engine, one detects a more noticeable hum from the new exhaust system. Less-restrictive mufflers snarl menacingly and only get angrier once the throttle is matted and the revs rise. As we’ve seen with other applications of the twin-turbo six, power is delivered with the immediacy of a large-displacement, naturally aspirated engine. The extra horsepower bestowed on the 335is isn’t exactly massive, but the car will still quickly shrink a straightaway, and it rockets into triple-digit speeds as if towed by a Boeing 747. Indeed, a few laps around Portugal’s Estoril racetrack revealed this car to be exactly what’s suggested by the spec sheet: a powerful 3-series with a fantastic soundtrack. As one might expect from the carry-over chassis, the balance, the predictability, and the unflappable poise that make the 3-series one of our favorite cars are all there in spades.

The 335is doesn’t exactly threaten the M3 performance-wise, and with a starting price of $50,525, the 335is coupe costs $8750 less than an M3 coupe. But compared with the M3 sedan, the 335is coupe saves only $5750; faced with that choice, we’d pony up for the four-door M3. Convertible versions of the 335is start at $59,075, or $8850 less than the M3 convertible. The 335is convertible will arrive in April; coupe buyers will have to wait until June. And don’t go looking for the 335is at dealerships outside North America; for once, BMW is building something just for us.

Mazda Five 2011

The bulk of the Mazda lineup has recently been updated, and the Japanese carmaker will bring its Mazda 5 small minivan in line when it unveils the new 2011 model at the Geneva auto show in early March.

The update represents the model’s first major freshening in a while, and the first since going on sale in the U.S. in 2005. The 5, which is known as the Premacy in Japan, takes on styling cues from the Mazda 3 on which it’s based, in particular the smiley-face grille and pronounced fenders. Moving aft of the A-pillars, Mazda says the new 5 is the first production model to fully adopt the wind-blown, swooping styling language the company has refined on several stunning concepts, starting with the Nagare in 2006 and including the Furai racer from 2008.

Inspired by the beauty of flowing elements in nature—nagare means “flow” in Japanese—the design language is most evident along the sides of the 5, where swooping creases between the beltline and rockers appear to be sculpted by the wind, lending a sense of motion. These particular elements can be found in all the previous concept vehicles and, according to Mazda, help the 5 achieve improved aerodynamic efficiency with less drag and more optimal lift characteristics. The result definitely is striking—think BMW’s flame surfacing on magic mushrooms. A more-sculpted rear fascia with revised taillights rounds out the major tweaks to the body.

We have yet to learn the extent of the interior changes, but the layout will remain a spacious and flexible place for six, complete with dual sliding doors for easy entry and exit. Improved materials and revised equipment are expected in order to keep the 5 on par with the updated-for-2010 CX-7 and CX-9.

The 2011 Mazda 5 will go on sale in Europe in the fall of this year with several powertrains, the most notable of which is a new, direct-injected 2.0-liter inline-four with the company’s “i-stop” stop/start technology. When equipped with a six-speed manual transmission, the new 5 is said to reduce carbon-dioxide emissions, which are directly tied to fuel consumption, by 15 percent. A 1.8-liter four and a small-displacement turbo-diesel also will be available.

The current U.S.-market 5 sports a 153-hp, 2.3-liter four mated to either a five-speed manual or five-speed automatic gearbox. While we don’t expect performance to match that of, say, our Mazdaspeed 5 Boss Wagon, the fitment of the redesigned-for-2009 Mazda 3’s optional 2.5-liter mill, which makes 167 hp and is paired with either a six-speed manual or a five-speed auto, seems likely. As is par for the course these days, expect a slight bump in fuel economy over the current car’s city/highway ratings of 22/28 mpg with the manual and 21/27 with the automatic.

Ford Edge Sport 2011 - Spied

The big reveal of the refreshed 2011 Ford Edge will take place in about two weeks at the 2010 Chicago auto show, but why wait—these spy snaps give us a pretty clear idea of what form it will take. Not only that, but this prototype also previews the Sport trim, which should continue to be the sharpest-looking Edge in the drawer.

As with its twin, the Lincoln MKX, the angular Edge undergoes a dramatic mid-cycle revamp for 2011, starting with fresh front-end styling that actually has some radius edges. Indeed, shades of the Toyota Venza and the Honda Accord Crosstour—both prime competitors—can be seen in the Edge’s visage, with a vast majority of its frontal area devoted to the T-shaped arrangement of the headlamps and thick three-bar grille. It does not appear, however, that the new fascia will be affixed to new front fenders (the MKX, by comparison, is all-new from the A-pillars forward), but certainty on that point is complicated by this prototype’s black-and-white “cheese-puff” camouflage.

Other aesthetic changes for the standard Edge are expected to be minimal, although this Sport prototype wears flashier rocker panels and a diffuser-look rear bumper as conspicuous conceits to its Sport designation. And speaking of conspicuous, the 22-inch wheels seen here are kinda, sorta bitchin’, especially for a stock-out-of-the-box Ford family car. Rounding out the appearance changes are the new taillamps, which will feature LED elements.

Count On a Vastly Improved Interior

What we can’t see here is the new tech-laden cabin, although Ford itself released images of the interior a few weeks ago when it announced an innovative new connectivity suite called MyFord and MyFord Touch. (The systems include things such as in-car WiFi, improved Sync voice control, apps, and iTunes audio tagging; it all sounds pretty cool.) As such, we already know that the interior of the 2011 Edge will feature upgraded materials and capacitive touch controls in place of some conventional buttons and switches.

While the Edge and Edge Sport currently share one engine—a 265-hp, 3.5-liter V-6—the 2011 Edge could follow the MKX in offering FoMoCo’s 305-hp, 3.7-liter V-6, possibly as an upgrade exclusive to the Sport model. Of course, switching the entire lineup to the 3.7-liter mill is entirely possible, too. However the V-6 situation pans out, it’s relatively certain that the Edge will eventually be available with an EcoBoost turbocharged engine. It’s more likely to be the highly anticipated new 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder rather than something burlier like the 355-hp, twin-turbo V-6 seen in the Taurus SHO and Flex EcoBoost. Ford has said that the 2.0-liter will be good for at least 230 hp.

Look for the 2011 Ford Edge to appear in showrooms late this summer. Lincoln MKX - Auto Shows 2011

Mid-cycle vehicle updates usually mean new headlights, a reworked bumper, and a fresh set of wheels, but Ford’s been taking the mid-cycle thing a bit further lately. Indeed, while its cars aren’t using all-new platforms or mechanicals, the company’s most recent mid-cycle changes are thorough enough to convince most people that the vehicles are all-new. The 2010 iterations of the Fusion and Mustang went beyond simple sheetmetal restyling to include vast interior improvements and effective engineering enhancements, and next up on a very special episode of Ford’s “Extreme Makeover, Mid-Cycle Edition” is the 2011 Lincoln MKX. It’s debuting at the 2010 Detroit auto show and bringing with it not just sweeping changes but also the first “buttonless” automobile interior.

But first, there’s the new bod. The current MKX was always a handsome, if forgettable, crossover. But thanks to all-new sheetmetal from the A-pillar forward and a new rear end, the MKX has become quite the looker for 2011. Unlike the hearse-like MKT, the MKX starts with innately tidy proportions and short overhangs, and has now artfully adopted the Lincoln dual-port grille. The front fenders now rise to accentuate the wheel arch, and there are new lower rocker moldings, too. The rear end—previously an unremarkable arrangement of rectangles—looks decidedly spicier now that the taillamps have gone from full-width to split, angular LED units.

Controls by Microsoft, Ergonomics by Apple?

The transformation continues inside, where occupants can luxuriate on new leather seats, which, along with the door panels and many other surfaces, are rendered in upgraded materials. “Tuxedo-stripe” stitching is a Lincoln first, and will soon join tunneled electroluminescent gauges, available THX stereos, and white dash illumination in the brand’s gene pool. There are seven selectable ambient-lighting colors, with five levels of intensity. The patina-look interior trim seen first in the MKT appears here, too, and while it certainly looks better than the satin-look junk in many Ford interiors of yore, we wonder how owners might feel about it after a few years.

But the most newsworthy aspect of the 2011 MKX is its debut of the awkwardly named but highly futuristic “MyLincoln Touch” interface, which essentially ditches conventional buttons and knobs for a network of capacitive-touch controls (think iPod or iPhone) spread about the neatly designed dashboard. Particularly cool are the two shiny horizontal spears which at first seem merely decorative but in fact are the controls for stereo volume and HVAC fan speed, actuated by sliding one’s finger across them. The latest voice-activated Ford/Microsoft Sync system comes standard and operates through an eight-inch LCD touch screen with handy color-coded menus. New this year for Sync is factory-installed HD radio, as well as the capability to tag a song you might want to download later. Also added are a pair of 4.2-inch LCD screens in the instrument cluster; they’re accessed by five-position toggles on the steering wheel. The screen on the left side displays basic vehicle data such as trip information and fuel economy, while the one on the right can be used to interface with multimedia devices.

Power and Torque Go Up, Fuel Economy Stays Flat

Less dramatic but equally significant (to us, anyway) are changes that you can’t run your finger along but which should be noticeable from the driver’s seat. The MKX’s standard 3.5-liter V-6 has been replaced by the new 3.7-liter unit shared with the 2011 Ford Mustang. Featuring variable cam timing, horsepower gets a 15-percent bump to 305, while torque climbs 12 percent to 280 lb-ft. The standard six-speed automatic transmission also now features manual-shift capability. Ford did not release fuel-economy estimates, but claims that the 2011 will match the front-wheel-drive 2010 model’s 25-mpg highway fuel-economy rating. City fuel economy for the 2010 model is 18 mpg, while all-wheel-drive versions are rated at 17/23.

Considerable revisions to the brakes are said to increase both feel and response, things we’ve rarely expected—or experienced—in a Lincoln but would definitely appreciate. Newly available driver aids include hill-start assist, trailer-sway control, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot detection, and cross-traffic alert for backing out of parking spots.

Late Fall Arrival

The 2011 Lincoln MKX arrives in dealerships in late summer, with base prices expected to stay near the current model’s $40K price of entry. Beyond Cadillac’s new-for-2010 SRX, the Lexus RX will be in this Lincoln’s crosshairs. We also expect Ford to roll out an updated 2011 Edge crossover (the MKX’s twin) around the same time. Why isn’t the Edge debuting in Detroit? Well, the Ford stand is already action-packed with the 2012 Focus and emboldened 2011 Mustang GT “5.0,” so the sharpened Edge probably wouldn’t get much play. The MKX, then, should get its fair share of attention—attention, it seems, that it may finally deserve.

Ford Mustang GT 2011 - Auto Shows

Few automobiles have had the sort of longstanding street cred given to Ford’s Mustang GT. But the deference it has enjoyed for much of its four-plus decades has been called into question recently now that recently introduced muscle-machines from Chevy and Dodge have come along with larger, high-tech V-8s. With its comparatively small 4.6-liter V-8 under the hood, the Mustang has had a lot to overcome. Alas, with its lighter weight and charming handling characteristics, the GT still won our most recent Mustang GT/Camaro SS/Challenger R/Tcomparo, and by a fairly comfortable margin. Well, come fall of 2010, the Mustang GT stands to put even more distance between it and its rivals with a thoroughly modern mill of its own, the new 5.0-liter “Coyote” V-8.

Fenders Say “5.0” and Mean It

Developed by a relatively small team of engineers working on a shoestring budget, the new 5.0 V-8 is nonetheless quite an achievement. Codenamed “Coyote” during development (Ford says its official name is “5.0-liter Ti-VCT DOHC V-8 Engine.” We prefer Coyote), the new, all-aluminum DOHC engine features four-valves per cylinder and displaces a full 5.0 liters. Contrast that with the old 4.9-liter “Five-Point-Oh” motor that Vanilla Ice crooned about forever ago. Compared with that engine, the new 5.0 is nearly twice as powerful, producing 412 hp at 7000 rpm (compared with 215 for the old 4.9) and 390 lb-ft of torque at 4250 rpm (versus the 4.9’s 285) on premium gas, with 300 lb-ft of that torque available at just 2000 rpm. Regular unleaded is acceptable to use, but expect the power ceiling to drop by 10 ponies and 13 lb-ft should you choose the cheap stuff. As for that power peak at 6500 rpm, well, that’s near the veritable rev stratosphere on Planet Muscle Car.

Incidentally, the Coyote shares pretty much nothing with the outgoing 4.6-liter V-8 currently providing 315 hp and 325 lb-ft of torque to the 2010 Mustang GT. Only the bore centers are the same; nothing from the 4.6-liter will even fit on the new engine. Bore increases from 90mm to 92.2mm, while stroke increases to 92.7mm. The compression ratio rises to 11.0:1. Cylinder heads are now more compact for better intake manifold flow. The intake manifold is now partially exposed and dressed to impress during that all-important driveway hood pop, thanks to a halo-style engine cover that covers only the wiring and fuel rails. Slick.

Some of the newfound potency (and speed of development) comes about by following some of the same channels that the base Mustang’s gutsy new 3.7-liter V-6 employed on its successful quest to achieve 305 hp. Most significant among them is the fitment of Ti-VCT (Twin Independent Variable Camshaft Timing), which Ford says will be on 80 percent of its products by 2012. It allows for extremely precise overlap of the time that both intake and exhaust valves are open, optimizing efficiency during both high- and low-load operation. As with the V-6, the cooling system has also been reworked both for efficiency and effectiveness. Also important is that the engine was designed for the (possible) future implementation of direct injection and/or turbocharging.

Minor Fuel-Economy Improvement

Curb weight is likely to remain close to that of the current GT, since the weight of the engine only increases by about 10–15 pounds, according to Ford. The GT was already the fuel-economy champ in its class, but fitted with the six-speed automatic it will gain two mpg on the highway to 25, while the 17 mpg figure in the city remains the same as the 2010 model. With the newly fitted MT82 six-speed manual replacing the five-speed from 2010 (that’s right, six forward gears, like the rest of the performance-car universe!), fuel economy remains flat at 16 and 24, which is still an achievement considering the massive power boost.

As for that way more important performance figure—acceleration—Ford has declined to give us a figure. But we’re betting on a 0-to-60-mph number in the 4.6-to-4.8-second range and a quarter-mile run of under 13 seconds, based on that fact that we’ve consistently been able to hustle the Chevrolet Camaro SS to 60 in 4.9 seconds and through the quarter at 13 flat with all of its extra bulk.

The Rest Gets Better Too

According to Ford, the entire chassis has been retuned—again, following a rather thorough retuning for 2010—including a new electric power-steering system, new anti-roll bars, new wheels and tires, upgraded stock brakes, and a new optional Brembo brake package that brings four-pot calipers and 14-inch rotors.

The 2011 GT also gets a few new convenience items, including a message center in the instrument cluster, convex outer sections in the exterior mirrors, a programmable vehicle key, illuminated visors with storage, and a universal garage-door opener. Convertible models benefit from additional stiffening, too.

Styling of the 2011 Mustang, which goes on sale this spring, hasn’t changed a lot from 2010, although there is a new grille and the car does see a three-percent improvement in aerodynamics thanks to new rear tire spats and better sealing around the radiator and decklid. There are also three new colors for 2011: Yellow Blaze Tri-Coat, Race Red, and Ingot Silver. Clearly, then, the most important exterior changes are those huge, gleaming “5.0” fender badges, and everything that they signify.
